Ponniyin Selvan 2 is a sequel to Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and others’ 2022 film Ponniyin Selvan 1.
The film is based on the literary work of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel of the same name, which narrates the story of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. The sequel follows the events after Arulmozhivarman’s coronation as the king of the Chola kingdom and his struggles to protect his throne from internal and external enemies. The film also explores the love stories of Arulmozhivarman with Nandini and Kundavai, as well as the fate of other characters like Vandiyathevan, Aditya Karikalan, Azhwarkadiyan, and Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar.

The film is adapted from the novel of the same name, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The novel was converted into a screenplay by director Mani Ratnam, B Jeyamohan, and Elango Kumaravel. B Jeyamohan pens the dialogues for the film in Tamil and Tanikella Bharani in Telugu. Subaskaran Allirajah of Lyca Productions produces the film. The music for the film is made by A R Rahman, while Ravi Varman does the cinematography. A Sreekar Prasad handles the editing.
